Shell
sculpture. copper wiring, rice paper, electronics, speakers. may 2004.

A physical representation of a drawing I had done in the past. Thoughts of the body as a vessel or shell of our souls. In this electronic sculpture the statue detects a person through a sonar sensor. As it is approached its "heartbeat" gradually increases, shown visually through the two red LED's in its chest and aurally through the beats coming from the speakers. At about a foot's distance (has a range of approx. 8') a threshold is reached, heart pounding and then its mechanical eye lifts open and blinks. In moving away the heartbeat slows.
